The onsen was great, and the TV showed information on how crowded it was - great when you’re a bit shy and don’t want to bathe naked with too many people :)

Nice walking trails (approx 2hrs so don't bring food) in the forest nearby though bears might be a concern as shown by signs of bear scratches and trapping cages. Nice cafes nearby. Dorm bed space is bigger than others with 2 dial lockers in the box bed enclosure. Get food provisions at the train station supermarket as options are limited at Tsuchiyu onsen especially during off peak season.
