Picture-postcard Heidelberg is guarded by its famous castle halfway up a hill. If you don’t fancy walking, a funicular railway goes there and continues to Königstuhl Mountain whose views are fit for the king it is named after. Dating to the 13th century, the ruined castle has peaceful gardens to wander, and the Heidelberg Tun, the world’s biggest wine barrel. And big it is!
At the foot of the hill is cobbled Hauptstrasse, supposedly Germany’s longest pedestrian shopping street selling traditional German beer mugs amongst other things. Also here are pavement cafes, the odd bierkeller and several Heidelberg hotels.
A short walk west is the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), towering above the Baroque old town. Its square is the site of the Heidelberg Christmas markets, while to the north the beautiful Old Bridge crosses the Neckar River and ends at a twin-towered city gate.
Further west is Heidelberg University, the oldest in Germany and with a national reputation to rival Cambridge, its twin city. Over the river, Neckarwiese is a riverside park popular with students for a barbecue and beer, while by night the city’s many bars stay open until the early hours (and beyond!).
The nearest airports – Frankfurt and Stuttgart – both offer quick access by train to the Heidelberg accommodation on Booking.com

Heidelberg station could do with a luggage storage facility at the train station. Though there is one at the tourist office just outside the station, its expensive and available during the working hours of the tourist office which is 10:00 - 17:00 hrs. It is not run by the Tourist Office but by another service provider.

Heidelberg is a stunning place, but perhaps it's a victim of its own success and I would think twice about going there at the height of the tourist season. Even on a wet Saturday morning in May, the old bridge was packed with Chinese tourists taking selfies, so I can't begin to imagine what it's like in the summer. My advice would be to go off season, have an early breakfast and wander the streets before the shops open.

Heidelberg is probably the most beautiful city I have visited in Germany. It looks like something out of a fairy tale. You can also enjoy nature in this city, I took the philosopher way and ended up on top of a mountain. It was just fantastic.

We just stopped for one night, between trains so just had a few hours and the evening. The Altstadt was very nice to wander round, and for a beer and dinner. I would like to go back and visit the castle, and see more of the town and area.

Christmas Market and all the wonderful Christmas shops.
Christmas Market and all the wonderful Christmas shops. Castle, funicular railway and the Old Town. The riverside, cafes and lovely restaurants, and just wandering through alleyways and coming upon lovely finds. Super friendly people and feeling really safe.
This hotel is located in the old town of Heidelberg which is wonderful. You can park in public parking nearby, however could not find the area the hotel instructed us to go to, so we had to pay the EUR 19 per 24 hours parking. We had a room on the 4th floor and there is no elevator, so it might be difficult to reach with all your luggage. We had no "blackout" curtains and only a fan. When I booked the hotel I did not check on an elevator or air conditioning, so the surprise was my own fault. Breakfast was fine.
Great hotel - newly refurbished and very stylishly decorated in contemporary style, much better than the photos. Very comfy bed, lovely bathroom (German plumbing is the best) and the staff were fantastic! The location was amazing, set up high on a mountain overlooking the stunning town of Heidelberg but with the advantage of a funicular to get you down into the town. The hotel is normally a high price point but we got a great deal on Booking.com partly thanks to my Genius discount.
Absolute gem in the middle of Heidelberg. Staff is attentive, professional, knowledgeable and courteous. Comfortable room w all amenities including air conditioning. Public spaces are beautifully furnished. Puppy dog was welcomed and spoiled. Parking for our SUV was easy. Quick walk to pedestrian zone, boat trips, and public transport.
Would have loved to be able to stream shows on TV but that’s a tiny thing.
Would return to Heidelberg just for this hotel.
Excellent ....just far enough away from the bustle for calm....but we walked along the river to get into town. You could get a bus.....but the fresh air and exercise was welcome
Very spacious room....all areas were very clean.....surprisingly good for a 3* We were travelling through so just a couple of nights ....but Neckarlux hotel would make a good base for a longer stay in the Heidelberg area. Eco-friendly.
An absolutely wonderful location. Super easy to get to the hotel from the train station and from the hotel to the city centre. A totally cool idea combining the hotel suite and the kitchen. The beds were comfy as well as the pillows. Our room was clean and cosy. It overlooked the inner garden. The staff are super friendly and helpful. I will definitely choose this hotel for my another trip to Heidelberg.
Lovely hotel in a great location. Lovely restaurant on top floor but also close to main shopping street with shops and restaurants. Hotel is clean and comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful. Room was comfortable and bathroom was so cleverly laid out with separate vanity section separate from main sink. Definitely recommend to anyone planning on visiting Heidelberg.
The staff are so helpful and always with a smile. The hotel is located in top of of a parking garage and you have a wonderful view. The hotel is in the heart of the old town. Bus is just outside your doorstep. Heidelberg is a lovely town. We went two couples together and stayed in room 22 and 23 and we had the most fantastic terass with gergious views.
The location of the hotel was great!! Easy short taxi ride from train station. The room and bathroom were quite large. The hotel is right in the middle of town close to sights, shopping, and wonderful restaurants. The gentlemen working the front desk were very helpful providing good information about Heidelberg and helping make our stay very nice.
We had a wonderful stay in a comfortable room with a balcony. We had an excellent view of Heidelberg and the river valley below. The hotel also had a beautiful terrace and a delicious breakfast. It was conveniently located next to the funicular for easy access to Heidelberg Castle and the Altstadt.
The room was very spacious. It had a mini kitchen and a dining area. The cleanliness of the hotel and room was fantastic. It was also in a quiet and safe area of town. Check in and check out was a breeze! We loved having A/C. We will definitely come back if we are ever in this area of Germany!
Splendid, cosy hotel on the hilltop with a breathtaking view of Heidelberg. Wonderful rooms, fully equipped, nice balconies. Very nice breakfast buffet. I had missed the fact that breakfast starts only at 8 AM on Saturdays: showing up at 7AM, I was however given bread, cheese and cold meat.
Loved this family run hotel in a quiet leafy side street in a very pleasant part of Heidelberg, 10 minutes from the station and not too far to walk into the old town. A bonus was the adjoining restaurant which served good value food and was clearly popular with locals.
Without any questions: Just the location of the hotel; being in the middle of the oldtown of Heidelberg (with the amazing church right outside) is just wow. And how they have preserved the structure and interior was just amazing. The staff was fantastic as well!
Excellent in every way. Staff are all pros. Breakfast is super. Rooms large and clean with fridge. Convenient to everything. Anywhere else in the world other than Germany this would be a 5 star hotel. We loved it and will stay again for sure.
Room for 4 is just right, body and face towels given, common kitchen was nice for heating food and water and meeting co-travelers. Bus and tram stop are both near the hotel. Will definitely come back when visiting Heidelberg
Excellent location with parking garage entrance less than 100 meters away. Terrific large rooms and wonderful biergarten. Great value for money. Short walks to all old town sites, in shadow of the Heidelberg Castle.
Lovely historical Hotel right in the heart of Heidelberg. The room where we stayed was spacious with a view of the Nekar. The beds and pillows were extra comfortable.
This was a great hotel for a weekend trip to Heidelberg! The room was modern and clean, and the hotel was just a short walk away from the main part of town.
