Sengokuhara Onsen, Hakone
Air-conditioned rooms feature a tatami (woven-straw) floor, on which traditional futon bedding is spread to sleep in. Amenities include an LCD TV, fridge, a safe and yukata robes. All rooms have a private toilet and washbasin, while bathroom facilities are shared. Green tea sets with snacks are provided. Family onsen rooms are a pleasant surprise to us. It allowed us to shower and onsen as a family. The restaurant staff were all so friendly and kind, and they always prepared baby chair and baby bowl and utensils for our toddler. The location is convenient as there is a combini nearby for snacks - the hotel has its own shop too. The room was spacious, though unlike other Ryokans I've stayed at, the mattresses didn't get put away during the day - no biggie though as we didn't spend much time in the room during the day.
Taito, Tokyo

A fridge and an electric kettle with green tea bags are included in each room. All rooms come with an en suite bathroom with a toilet and shower, while some rooms have a bathtub. Great stay! Perfect location with pleasant and helpful staff. There’s also a fantastic local restaurant nearby.
Hakone
Main Dining Room "The Fujiya" serves French cuisine in an elegant space. Restaurant Cascade offers Western dishes, while Kikka-so serves traditional Japanese kaiseki dinners. A bar, lounge and bakery are available. The hotel itself is absolutely exceptional, and probably the most impressive luxury hotel I've ever stayed. If you enjoy the history exploration and the Japanese-western style, Fujiya definitely will be a great fit. The hotel finished its renovation 2 years ago and everything is in good condition. You can experience its glory and rich history since the majority of areas are free to explore for staying guests. (Do not miss its museum, library and garden. The swimming pool is a bit small, and personally I quite enjoyed its style.) In fact, my friends and I spent so much time exploring the hotel itself, the time spent in Fujiya hotel eventually became the highlight of our Hakone trip.
Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo
At the ryokan, every unit is fitted with a tatami and a flat-screen TV. There is a private bathroom with bidet in some units, along with slippers, a hair dryer and free toiletries. The units are equipped with heating facilities. The staff is great! The location is really pretty and well located on the west side of Tokyo. It’s really close to a JR and a metro station, there are many restaurants close by. It’s a family run business and they are amazing people. The rooms are very neatly kept - we stayed in both: private bathroom 1 night, shared bathroom 2 nights. I prefer private (but I guess this will be everyone LOL). The shared toilets, showers and washrooms are super clean and well kept
Taito, Tokyo
A 2-minute walk from Sendagi Subway Station, Japanese-style hotel Annex Katsutaro Ryokan features rooms with traditional tatami (woven-straw) flooring and free Wi-Fi internet.
The air-conditioned rooms at Ryokan Annex Katsutaro feature Japanese futon bedding, and each has a TV and fridge. The attached bathroom includes a bathtub.
Great location near Sendagi station and a walkable distance away from Nippori station. It's located in a residential area, just beside the Yanaka Ginza shopping street which has great food. It's also near the famed snake street and the Yanaka temples. There are also three convenience stores and two supermarkets right outside the ryokan. The ryokan owners are a friendly and helpful elderly couple. They provided enjoyable recommendations around the area. Western-style breakfast is served upon request and has to be made at least a day in advance. The room itself is spacious compared to other japanese business hotels as the futon doesn't take up as much space as a bed. The futon and duvet are also comfortable and provided enough warmth for a winter night. The ensuite bathroom and toilet are clean. Potable water flows from the toilet tap (guests should be aware that cloudy hot water from the tap is a result of trapped air bubbles and not contamination, thus should clear up after a few minutes). Wifi was strong and easy to use. Overall a comfortable and lovely stay!
Highly recommended for anyone interested in a stay with local flavour.

This was close to the end of our two and half week Japan trip, and we had already been to many hotels and accommodations: If you are looking for ascetic Japanese inn, this is for you. You won't get much for basic fare, which for our trip was twice or thrice the normal price for a night, but if you are happy with a public bath, yukata and tatami mat with a futon on it, you are in for good times (we weren't).
It’s a little tired but authentic. Love the experience of traditional Ryokan. It’s so special when the staffs come and prepare a spread of dinner table in your tatami room and then after the dinner they turn the room into a bed room by bringing out Futon. The quality of Onsen water is fantastic. The staffs are very friendly and welcoming.
For us it was the perfect stay in a Japanese ryokan - spacious room with tatami and a low table and comfortable floor-low chairs, very comfortable (and large) futons, house yukata and jacket, relaxing onsen bath every evening … and an overwhelming variety of delicious food for dinner and breakfast, some of which was cooked on little stoves on the table. For us it was the perfect choice for a very clean ryokan with very friendly and attentive staff.
It was our first time staying at a Ryokan and it exceeded our expectations the room was traditional japanese room with tatami and at the upper level we had our futons. The onsen bath was refreshing and calming. The food was so delicous and well portioned and locally sourced. Our only regret is that we did not stay longer.
Staff were polite and helpful, are English competent. Loved the traditional dinner and breakfast and the experience of wearing yukatas everywhere, traditional Japanese public bathing facilities, the outdoor onsen after dinner where you can gaze up at the stars before falling asleep on futons in a tatami room. We had fantastic view of the mountains from our window. Quiet location.
We had such a fantastic experience during our stay at Ajisai and loved walking around in the supplied Yukatas! We really enjoyed the private onsen which we definitely made use of with our family, and the futon bed was extremely comfortable. Just note that it is a fair walk (especially if you have luggage), so best to take a taxi from Gora Station to get to the Ryokan.
I've appreciated the traditional style of the place; I wanted to experience staying one night in a ryokan. The futon, the tatami and the typical furniture of the room, everything was there. The onsen was also pleasant. My best memory is the kindness of the secund man who helped me whenever needed, the efforts he made to communicate with me to provide me with all information.
The ryokan is centrally located in Ueno and convenient for the University of Tokyo. It's a ryokan, so you get a low futon and tatami mats on the floor. They also provide you with a yukata to wear indoors. The owners are lovely, and arranged a late check-in for me without any difficulty. It is excellent value for the price.
Amazing facilities. You get to experience a lot as you get complementary yukatas and access to an amazing onsen. The rooms are very well furnished and the tatami mats and futons are a must experience
The traditional Ryokan was what we searched for and we were happy to receive the full experience with yukata's and futons. We had a personal toilet for the room (not in the room itself but we expected a shared one) And we were lucky with the onsens as we could use them both times by ourselves. The food was delicious and a good introduction to traditional Japanese food
