I'm afraid my impression of Bar was that it was industrial, a bit ugly and not very well looked after.(Sorry Bar, maybe I didn't go to the right places!) Wanting to visit places that are not yet wholly given over to tourism, is a two edged sword; it means that the 'pretty views' are often obscured by something utilitarian and not pretty! I took a taxi boat to Sutomore beach, which was a lovely trip and incredibly good value. The beach and water was fabulous but I think every person in the whole of Montenegro had had the same idea and the beach was extremely crowded. My reason for visiting Bar was to do the train journey from Bar to Belgrade, which I had read was one of the most beautiful in Europe. The coast is beautiful and perfect for swimming, snorkeling and sunsets. We liked the fact you could walk all the way from our apartment to the town. It is a small village and a big part of it is touristic.
It is a small village and a big part of it is touristic. The upper village parts are local and look nicer. The beach is okay, and it is possible to be there without renting chairs by buying a big umbrella in one of the shops. Šušanj is on the coast, you will have a good view from the terraces of most houses. The beach is long with several rows of beautiful pine trees 10-15 meters from the sea along the entire length of the beach, this creates beautiful natural shadows, the beach is good, in some parts with finer sand or smaller stones, the only anomaly for some may be that there are large stones in the sea. We did not stay in Virpazar but walked there about 8 km from our village (Seoca). For (part of) the back trip we arranged a boat bringing us back to our closest beach, like a taxi, for a price much less than a regular boat tour. Sutomore is a very friendly little seaside bay, lined with shops and restaurants, all reasonably priced. What food produce you cannot get from the smaller seafront shops you will find in the bigger shops along the main road that you arrived via. Everyone seems to speak perfect English and everyone was super friendly. The little seafront road can be chaotic and with no dedicated footpath you need to be careful. The bay itself is beautiful with limestone mountains behind you and clear blue water in front of you. Together with two castles you can freely visit and with also the possibility to get to a lake tour within minutes, if you use the tunnel, or take the mountain route road and see fantastic panoramas of both sides of the mountain range, and with snow capped Albanian mountains along the horizon - the place is a dream come true.Guest review byJohnHungary
