I originally booked Dormy Inn, but when I arrived I was informed that the onsen is under maintenance for a few days during my stay and is offered me to transfer to Annex instead, they even help me book taxi form Dormy Inn to Dormy Inn Annex for free. While my stay in Annex, everything is good and comfortable. Front house staff are super friendly and helpful. Greet me every time when I return hotel. The room was amazing. It was spacious, had a huge bed and even a window seating area. The view was decent from higher floor too. On the top floor, there was even a spa area, which was free for all guests! It has a sauna, an indoor and an outdoor bath. There were also vending machines and laundry machines on that floor. Didn't explore much beyond the Peace Memorial Park, the Vitims memorial (so quiet and thought provoking, they have used the sound of water very well) and some nearby streets as only here for an afternoon and a morning. It certainly makes you question why atomic bombs were ever developed and affirms that they should never be used again. Seeing trees that survived the bomb, and listening to an 'in utero' survivor was moving too. On a happier note the okonomyaki is very much recommended. It isn’t a typical tourist destination from my understanding but the gardens by night are absolutely stunning. The casual is also beautiful and I’m sad to have missed the pottery class. Food and bars also exceptional - everybody is particularly friendly, and perhaps less used to accommodating tourists. Coffee: Empire coffee roasters. Friendly service and outstanding coffee. Onomichi is a picturesque and walkable city with lots of charm. You can stroll the vintage shotegai, visit the art museum, enjoy a snack at Onomichi U2, take a temple walk, ride the ropeway, and of course, biking the Shimanami Kaido. We stayed here rather than on Naoshima island and took the short ferry across to the island. When we planned our trip, I had not factored in that many of the museums on the island were closed on a Monday and that some had to be booked for the Sunday. The benefit is that the onsen next to the Uno hotel is wonderful. You can be outside in one of the outside baths and at night gaze at the stars. We had a massage and a Japanese meal in the onsen and ambled happily back to the hotel. We delayed our planned departure to go the next morning after we had checked out of the hotel. Quiet, orderly place where the emphasis is on peace, forgiveness and rejuvenation. Was ironic to sit there and contemplate what is currently going on in the world. Amazing how much was left standing and conversely how much was destroyed. The stone marking the hypocentre is very understated.
