Bathrooms are like everywhere in such type of accomodations, but hot water was strong and stable. Food was delicious, and staff is helpful and welcoming, ready to assist with any requests. In the last 7 years I have only been skiing in Bulgaria, although there are beautiful ski areas in Romania as well. Until this year I have only been to Borovets and Bansko. It is an amazing quiet place in the mountain. I like visiting in the summer because of the views and hiking opportunities. I prefer staying in areas like Smolyan Lakes rather than the town or Pamporovo as I like to be far from people. There are a lot of hikes and places to visit (with car, short hikes and long ones). Zlatograd is an undiscovered gem of a town up in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains of Southeastern Bulgaria, a few kilometers north of the Greek border. It has a nice old town with an Ethnographic Museum complex, old style Balkan architecture, and its new town is pleasant, too. Dospat is a very small town.
Dospat is a very small town. There is a bank with an atm, a few supermarkets with most things, and a few restaurants. Our favorite was Ресторант-градина Орфей- which has excellent food and was open until 11pm (other places closed before 8pm). We visited the cave Devil's throat, there, the herb garden at the hotel is beautiful. There is a bear museum which we failed to visit but worth doing it since on the same ground. Next day we did the Eagle's eye platform and Yagodinska cave. About the hotel: The balcony overlooks the river which was an amazing feature, very relaxing, staff is so friendly, breakfast was excellent. Also for families travelling with a car, the parking spot next to the building is so convenient. It is an excellent place to visit for the weekend with a kids. The restaurant has a very nice outside patio and inside space to enjoy traditional Bulgarian dishes they offer. The hotel building was good. The spa was very small and inadequate. The restaurant was very, very bad. All the food was either stale food in the microwave or ready-made frozen food (pizza). The grilled meat dish had a very bad smell, we couldn't eat it. It was an off-season stay. You shouldn't use the restaurant in off-season stays. It was not my first time in Smolyan but my first time coming...
It was not my first time in Smolyan but my first time coming here alone. I have been mostly in warmer months but I have enjoyed some nice weather as well - I managed to do some proper hiking - going to the Nevyastata area and to the Waterfalls Canyon, as well as exploring the Old Town and the New City center. I should confess that the length of the town is quite challenging even for a person who enjoys walking. I had to take a taxi to go to the Nevyastata but I walked back and it took me more than 2 hours. It was worth it though.
