The decision to stay for the night in this converted prison was born out of curiosity. The initial drive into the parking area of the hotel was awfully depressing. Huge tall vertical walls and a massive block like building with tiny windows that box you in. Having parked you take a second look and see a modern tower of glass and smooth contemporary architecture that forms an inviting entrance in the middle of the granite structure. After entering the inner sanctuary via a tunnel through the thick outer wall of the prison block you are greeted by a simple reception pult that whilst mirroring the austerity of the main prison is actually the domicile of a friendly receptionist. She (or he) is happy to give you a smile and listen to your jokes about not having being there for a while and not wanting to stay too long. Nowadays though the reception staff hand out personal magnetic cards instead of accompanying you to your room with a key. There are three floors with rows of cells facing each other on each side of a long central gallery. A glass roof and metal staircases at each end of the block complete the first impression. In former days the architecture was simple but the new architects have done a wonderful job with the conversion. External elevators now connect the floors, discrete openings provide easy access to the restaurants and other public areas. Each hotel room is formed by connecting three cells internally to provide bedroom, sitting room and bathroom. The architects have managed to combine modern elements with colour and soft surfaces to provide a feeling of luxury and warmth whilst at the same time retaining a presence of the severity and spartanism that once dominated. A true work of art, we enjoyed our stay, the restaurant, breakfast in the old chapel and a guided tour of the older non-converted part of the prison provided a highlight to our holiday. Die Entscheidung, in diesem umgebauten Gefängnis zu übernachten, entstand aus Neugier.

Comfy rooms with homemade shortbread, sherry, and fresh milk at the door in the morning. We were on a road trip but I would have loved to stay at least a second night at The Crown Inn! There is also a pub on the property that served the best fish & chips I had in my life. The scenery of the pub garden, with the village church's bell tower in the backdrop, was also uplifting. Would definitely come back.

If travelling by bus from St Austell. Check the times at the bus station by the train station. They are not very frequent. Also to get the bus back go to banana car park at Eden. Not very well sign posted Eden project is lovely. Don’t go when kids are off if you don’t like crowds

On a hot day I would recommend starting in the rain forest dome because it gradually gets hotter & hotter. There is a little cool down section I assume with AC, if it all becomes too much. Don't miss the Core zone

I felt that older people have to be warned about the amount of walking involved in a visit to the Eden Project. Even getting to the main entrance from the car park is quite a distance. As it was a particularly hot day, we were exhausted and I explained that I could not walk back to the car park as my feet were sore. So, to our relief a lovely young girl came to our rescue and drove us in a buggy back to the car.

We loved the Eden project, it was so interesting. Allow plenty of time to saunter and wear something light and cool especially on a sunny day. In the tropical biome there is a water fountain where you can fill a bottle of water and a cool room half way up.

I go every time I visit Cornwall.

I go every time I visit Cornwall. It is a stunning place to immerse yourself in. So much beauty, incredible planting, views, learning opportunities and activities. The Food Area is fantastic with a wide range of delicious food to chose from. The Biomes are stunning, you need to dress to accommodate the high temperatures inside & fully enjoy the totally immersive experience of the Rainforest & Mediterranean. I always go on the train, there is a shuttle bus to Eden from there & back but there are extensive carparks ranged round the site.Definitely an experience not to be missed!

A very nice hotel with an excellent room and very comfortable beds. We stayed in a building separate from the main hotel, so had to walk up for breakfast, which wasn’t an issue and on weekends, it might actually be preferable. There’s no lift in this building and the stairs are quite narrow, just for your information. The location is ideal, right in the heart of Charlestown and close to the Eden Project. Overall, a very pleasant stay.

The staff were great - friendly, welcoming, accommodating and efficient. We felt well looked after during our stay. We had dinner at the hotel a couple of evenings and thought the food was very good. The White Hart is an excellent base for visiting Heligan, Eden Project, etc. (especially for non-drivers like us) and when we weren't out and about we found the bar and lobby area a congenial spot to spend time.

We had a great stay here. The room was cosy and spotless - it looked like it had been freshly renovated. We felt very comfortable there. The staff were lovely and the pub great too, offering some nice local beers and a good crowd. We were able to leave our luggage at the hotel for the day which was super helpful! We walked from the hotel to the harbour in Charlestown where there were some nice bars and restaurants. We also walked to the Eden Project so the location was perfect for us. Would definitely stay again!

Great location. Short walk to beach, down from the cliff top. Longer but pleasant walk (30 mins) to the harbour village of Charlestown. Good mixture of activities. Nice outside pool with warm water, perfect for a sunny day. Inside pool and jacuzzi for colder days. Sauna and steam room. Quiet, clean, upmarket hotel with lots of older couples here for the golf course. Lovely views from the bedroom window. I didn't have a car but used the same taxi firm to take me to the impressive Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.
