Overlooking Matera’s Sasso Barisano, Fra I Sassi Residence is set in restored 17th-century buildings inside the Matera Sassi UNESCO site area. It offers a sun terrace and air-conditioned rooms with stone walls and views of the historical centre. Our room had the most amazing views of the historic center. It was worth the stay just for the view! But luckily, everything else was great as well. The room was comfortable with a huge shower. The staff were absolutely lovely and provided us with vegan croissants when I told them we were vegan. For us, the location was great as it was right in the middle of everything.

Ridola Hotel was designed in 1872 by Leonardo Ridola, a famous local architect. It still has original vaults and pavements, and its façade features a solar clock from the 1900s. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a delicious treat.

The In Pietra is set in a converted monastery from the 13th century. Today it offers a large hall, a reading room and a wine cellar. This boutique hotel was exceptional. We rented the room with tub and sauna and it was perfect. Room was even larger than expected and the extras of bathrobe, Epson salts and slippers was a great touch. Breakfast was super, even eggs and bacon for those who like a hot breakfast along with all the usual continental and European pastries and focaccia. The music piped into our room was ultra relaxing too …only wish we’d arrived earlier or first day to enjoy it all more.

Air-conditioned rooms all feature a flat-screen satellite TV, a seating area and fully fitted private bathroom with a shower. Great location just off a main street and piazza, and walkable to many sights. But yet very quiet. The room was large but basic. A good breakfast in the morning. We had to leave early the last morning, and the hostess accommodated us with an early breakfast.
