We've been considering whether to visit Kyoto or not during our Japan holidays. It turned out to be a right decision, as we liked the vibe of the city, very different from Tokyo. I liked the cuisine, lots of excellent restaurants, street food and the fact our hotel was so close to the city center we did not have to take public transport that often. However, what I did not like that much was, that when we had to take the public transport, it was less connected and the connections less clear that in Tokyo. Also, the numerous souvenir shops were more touristy, with less nice things. And, the waiting lines to almost every shop (!) were driving me crazy. For example, waiting line to Onitusuka Tiger shop was constantly 60 minutes minimum, while in Shibuya Tokyo, I was out of the shop in 30 minutes with my new pair on.

We went to a performance at the Kabuki theatre. That was fascinating. Also went to UJI (30 mins by train) to a museum based entirely on the book THE TALE OF GINJI written 1000 years ago. It was a thrill to visit such a unique museum in a forest setting.

There was a mass of humanity during our October visit, and while the streets, shrines, and restaurants were very busy, everyone was polite. When we had walked and walked we would get a taxi for the next destination. That was better than spending our money at a Starbucks!

Kyoto is marvelous, but what’s more important - I definitely recommend to check Osaka, Uji, Nara and other nearby locations, since it’s really full of different experiences. I’d also highlight that after busy Tokyo Kyoto felt much much more comfortable 😆

Japan is not the old Japan back 10 years ago. I want to see people speak Japanese to me instead of Chinese or English. Unfortunately, too many foreigners workers working on convenience stores etc. Although overcrowded everywhere, people are polite and in good manners that I see. Overall, we enjoy the trip very much! Will come back again because still lots of places that I want to visit or visit again!

Kyoto is a big city for someone like me, coming from a small and quiet country. The moment I arrived, I was amazed by how vibrant and full of life it was — every corner seemed to have something fascinating to see or experience. But if you don’t speak the language or plan ahead, it’s easy to feel a little lost in the fast pace and busyness. Thankfully, I was blessed to have friends there who guided me around, making it so much easier to explore and discover the beauty of Kyoto.

We loved our stay at Sakara Gion. It's a spacious two-bedroom machiya house, perfect for a family. Located in the heart of Gion district, a short walk to Tatsumi bridge, Shinbashi-dori, Yasaka Shrine, Kenninji Temple and Gion corner, but on a quiet street. We saw geisha twice. The host was friendly and responsive, giving us tips on the best local restaurants. Two metro stations are close by. The house has a lived-in feel, which is great for families.

Fantastic location. Near Nishiki market which had lots of unexpected great food. Near happening shopping areas and walkable to the train stations and Gion area. Hotel staff were very friendly and went out of the way to introduce places for us to visit. Do note however that only basic room cleaning is provided most days with full cleaning only on third night.

This was an exceptional hotel. It was probably the most thoughtful hotel I've stayed where everything was perfectly presented or provided. Yes it's not 5 stars but it just got all of the amenities and basics so completely correct that I just feel this is the best complete showing for a hotel I've ever experienced. Ah.. I miss kyoto!

Best place we have stayed at while travelling around Japan. The rooms are a decent size, it’s a beautiful hotel in a very good location close to Gion and train stations. Fabulous breakfast including wagyu steak!
