Little traditional japanese house where you can sleep on futons. The host Roxy was very warm and friendly. It felt very authentic and we had a lovely time there. Totally recommend!

The ryokan is located in a beautiful valley, close to the bus terminal, to the the ropeway entrance and walking distance from some very beautiful hiking trails. The outdoor onsen is breathtaking and the water temperature is just perfect (around 42 degrees). The breakfast buffet and the evening buffet are very rich and varied (sushi, crab legs, Japanese and western dishes). The quality of the food is really good for a buffet. The Japanese style room was very large and comfortable and so were the beds.

My room was very big for one person, i had space for my lagage, space to hang clothes, big window. The matress was comftereble. They have a kitchen i could use.

    I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024.

    I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024. Sounkyo is a very picturesque small town. There are Sika deer that come into the town center to eat! The Sounkyo Gorge is impressive with mount Kurodake toweing over the Gorge. Take the Daisetsuzan Sōunkyō Kurodake Ropeway and on a good day you can see a 360 degree panorama of the Daisetuzan mountain range. There is a very good Visitors Center in Sounkyo with very friendly and helpful staff. One of the staff took me on a walk through the deep new powder snow which had fallen the night before. The lady took me just because she loved that area and was pleased I was interested in finding walks to explore. I would love to come here again in the summer and Autumn to see the changing seasons.

    Great walks and lovely scenery.

    Great walks and lovely scenery. Recommend to come in 1st week October cause we came on 3rd week and the autumn leaves didn’t appear yet. Regardless thoroughly enjoyed the ambience , walks and scenery. Will visit again !

    We had a comfortable stay at this hotel, the manager was kind enough to let us make changes to our booking, which we really appreciated. The hotel is located in a very quiet area, near the cable car to the mountain and tourist information centre.

    We loved the atmosphere of the hotel and the extra’s they offer such as the onsen scrub experience and the complimentary fruit teas and liquors. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The room was clean and in traditional tatami style.

    Food is great though with lots of variety. Our room is great , many onsen in one big hotel. Nice view from our window. My son dropped his retainer five hours before he realized it and reception kept it for us. Thanks.

    Breakfast was great. Location was about 10 mins walk away from Dohoku Bus Terminal at Sounkyo Onsen Town. Hotel was old but clean and area was beautiful.
