Founded by Etruscans around 900 BC, the city was first conquered by Romans and later by Lombards. The Middle Ages saw it becoming the independent and flourishing Republic of Siena, until its annexation to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The economic difficulties that followed turned out to be a blessing for the preservation of its historic centre. Adorned with frescoes by Ghirlandaio and bass-reliefs by Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Jacopo della Quercia, the Duomo represents the highest expression of this well-kept legacy. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, with the Palazzo Pubblico and the Gaia Fountain, is still the heart and soul of the city. Follow the labyrinth of narrow streets and passages that irradiate from there and you will be enchanted by its romantic atmosphere from ancient times.

It's a beautiful city.
It's a beautiful city. Quite confusing to find your way around. Do not get the train, though. You have a bus replacement at Empoli. I'm fluing back from Pisa and taking the bus to Florence, then the train to Pisa. If you're using Trainline beware of delays which then mess up the rest of the journey. Loved walking around and shopping. Saw beautiful places and buildings. Didn’t realise that transport on a Sunday so limited so unable to visit neighbouring towns but spent a lovely time relaxing at a huge park. Quite a walk as on opposite side of town but lovely. Assisted us with a beautiful room overlooking stunning Siena. The room was clean, air-conditioned, and the church bells a wonderful alarm clock the following morning. The breakfast was excellent, with great choices, from cured meats and cheeses to cereal and fruit, bread. The coffee was freshly brewed as the waitress made it for those who wanted a fresh cup.
