The hotel is in a gated area. We felt secure and safe. Parking was included. Nice breakfast spread daily. The staff was exceptional. Our host was waiting on a group checking in and noticed me patiently waiting until he was done, but he stopped what he was doing to ask if he could help me! Large room and bath.

Liked religious sites and the fact that there were more English speaking workers at restaurants. Didn't like a lot of the food we had or ambiance. Florence is better feeling more upscale and clean. If you want to see historic sites and relax go to Florence. Also visited Naples which was worst ambiance (full of graffiti, crowded, speeding vehicles, loud, unfriendly people if don't speak Italian). Rome was a mixture of Florence and Naples. Also, Vatican is its own country so when the Pope decides to close something it does, he's the sole ruler. So unfortunately our $150 tickets to the basilica of St. Peter were a waste because he closed the basilica the entire morning. When it reopened at 1pm the wait line was 2.5 hours of waiting outside in the very hot sun, so we weren't able to get in.

Public transport in Rome is very unreliable.

Public transport in Rome is very unreliable. Due to frequent strikes, it may not operate at all or only partially. The official schedules in apps are often inaccurate, arrival times are not respected and often delayed, and some listed connections simply don’t show up — you just wait and hope the next one comes. However, when the metro is running, it’s fairly frequent.

Visiting Rome was an unforgettable experience — truly like walking through a living museum. Every corner of the city tells a story, from the majestic Colosseum and the awe-inspiring Roman Forum to the breathtaking beauty of the Pantheon and the artistic treasures of the Vatican. Strolling through the cobblestone streets, surrounded by ancient ruins and grand piazzas, felt magical. You can feel the layers of history everywhere — centuries blending together in one incredible city. Even simple moments, like enjoying espresso at a sidewalk café or tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, felt special and full of meaning. Rome is not just a destination; it’s an emotion. It’s a place where art, culture, and history come alive in every step you take. We can’t wait to return! ❤️

City is beautiful but feels like in a state of abandonment.

City is beautiful but feels like in a state of abandonment. Ruins and monuments have no signs, there are bushes growing on the top of the ruins, gardens are unkempt. The heavy traffic and over-tourism doesn't help.

We loved seeing the iconic sights but were shocked at how very crowded it was in October. Very long lines at most attractions - standing in the hot sun. Security line to get into St Peter’s was easily 90 minutes wait in sweltering heat. People were not considerate - pushing, bumping into you, cutting you off when walking, etc.

There is so much to see in Rome, it is worth paying for guided tours to places such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon and Vatican if you haven't been before, preferably in a small group. The crowds were a bit overwhelming at these places, especially the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel and being in a group gets you through the security quickly. The Sistine Chapel was far too crowded for my liking. Many good eating places and I liked all the different piazzas and churches. I found it was possible to visit all the attractions on foot from my hotel near the Vatican. Everything is within 2-3 miles of each other.
