Vibrancy, Vespas, Vesuvius
Undulating beside the Bay of Naples, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a maze of narrow streets and funicular railways. Although it has an incredible array of churches and monuments, it’s the sheer energy, pulsating life, and buzz of Vespas that really make it exciting.
At first you could mistake this for chaos, but given time you’ll see there’s method to the madness. The stunning, curved portico of the Royal Palace. The perfectly thin pizzas which originated here. The red pepper trinkets to ward off the evil eye adorning practically every old town doorway. All are crafted to perfection.
While all this goes on at street level, below is Underground Naples – a series of visitable tunnels and even a Graeco-Roman theatre which you stop at before emerging into someone’s house!
Head up to the Posillipo area for stunning views of the city and Vesuvius in the distance. The volcano itself can be visited and looking down from it towards Pompeii and Herculaneum gives context to the thousands of artefacts now on display in the city’s National Archaeological Museum.

The city of Naples has much to offer visitors. The city is full of history and beautiful architecture. It is divided into different quarters and most are fine to visit during the day but at night I would recommend careful selection. A day and half is a perfect amount of time to see all of the sites if you are fit and can handle a lot of walking. We walked 12 miles in one day and managed to see most if not all of the major attractions. We also visited the Forcella quarter which had amazing things to offer. It is a historic neighborhood in the center of the city. Make sure to visit one of the oldest bars/cafe in Naples, Gambrinus! The pastries and specialty coffees were very good. For dinner, I would highly recommend Mimi at the Ferovia. The food is excellent!! Reservations are advised. Take your favourite walking shoes! Lots of history here. Must visit Pompeii, take a train from the main station, everyone is very helpful and understand/speak enough English to help you on your way. Take the bus share from the airport to the station, then buy a metro pass, but remember to stamp it before your first journey. Great place to stay for a few nights and easy commute to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Restaurants are plentiful and we tried 3 different ones. Two of them were superb and one was a dud. That usually happens though wherever you go. Overall there was a lot of graffiti everywhere and quite untidy in a lot of areas.
