Tuscan Majestic Baths
Montecatini Terme has been known for centuries as one of the most famous spa towns in Italy. Located in the Tuscan province of Pistoia, the town started the process of building baths to contain the thermal waters at the foot of the Montecatini hill as early as in 1530.
The famous baths of Tettuccio, Bagno Regio and Terme Leopoldine were built in the 1770’s, during the rule of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century and after several changes of names that it started to gain fame as a popular resort.
New baths and spa hotels were built at Montecatini’s foothill, growing the quality of the services, and changing the conceptual approach. The baths were joined by Art Nouveau buildings, as well as a casino, theatres, restaurants and nightclubs. Famous intellectuals and artists of the time like Giuseppe Verdi and Luigi Pirandello could often be seen around.

A good base if your a bit more adventurous and don't mind travelling by train. For example Pisa and Florence are both reachable by train but include changing trains at various places. Montecatini itself is a little run down in places with all the spa buildings closed. A nice little town square where a few bars can be found. This city is very walkable with large parks and green spaces. Lots of shopping available in downtown area. The walk to the funicular to Montecatini Alto was lovely and through a beautiful park. Alto offers beautiful views and some historic insights. Beautiful town. Tricky to cycle out of with busy traffic but drivers are respectful of cyclists. Well worth a visit. Good train connections also. Lots of lovely hotels and a laundromat which is always useful!Guest review bybethanyAustralia - 10.0

Beautiful setting and amazing views. Great train links to Lucca, Florence, Pisa and Viareggio. Trip up to Montecatini Alto is a must very pretty town and the most amazing views. The owner and his family are very nice, they gave us a lot of informationa what to do and where to go. The hotel gave us an"ancient times" sansation, like we were in another time. Very clean, near the terme and near the city centre and with a biiig free parking. We had breakfast but we also ordered lunch severel times there. It was delicios and cheap ( 11 euro pasta).
