A Bastion of Old World Charm
The arrival point of low-cost airlines and cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.
One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its pavement cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The next door Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.
Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by funicular railway.
A funicular also descends to the modern town – Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, and opposite is the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC play in a stadium to the north-east, while south-west is the train station from where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.
Booking.com offers several Bergamo hotels near the airport and the neighbouring Orio Centre shopping complex.

Bergamo is a charming Italian city in Lombardy, known for its picturesque division into two parts. Città Alta (Upper Town) – the historic old town, situated on a hill, surrounded by the perfectly preserved, over 6 km long Venetian Walls (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Città Bassa (Lower Town). The modern, busier part, connected to Città Alta by the historic funicular railway. The city is beautiful, it has a lot to offer tourists, the people are cultured, there is a lot to offer, the architecture is at an enviable level, the upper town is simply beautiful and definitely worth seeing. The coffee is good of course, the food is too, the streets are clean and tidy, the parks are beautiful and tidy. I visited Bergamo in autumn, the colors are beautiful, but I am sure that the city is beautiful in other months too. Bergamo is a beautiful city! Very easy to navigate and the locals were very friendly. I would highly recommend a visit, and I will definitely be returning 😊 Citta Alta is a beautiful place to visit and having eaten at Antica Trattoria La Colombina, I can also highly recommend this place! We stayed in the citta alta old town of bergamo on the hill. Beautiful old town with lots of history. Lovely to wander around and sit in the piazzas with a drink. Two beautiful churches to look inside with amazing interiors. Lots of bars/restaurants. You can also get another funicular to go higher again to an old castle ruin with fantastic views. Kids realy liked him bcs he wellcomed them with nutella and candys. Apartmant has 2 seperate bedrooms, kitchen and toilet all renewed and extremly clean, fully equiped, better than any hotel in Italy.
