Spiritual Sanctity in the Umbrian Hills

Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.

The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.

Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.

Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.

The cobbled streets ascending Assisi’s hills contain most of Booking.com’s accommodation options, including luxury hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near Santa Maria degli Angeli train station.

    A stunning town and well worth the visit. Friendly people and plenty of cafe and restaurants in the town. Added bonus, traffic free so easy to roam freely. Beautiful churches to enjoy the architecture and amazing views from the city walls

    We only spent one night in Assisi which gave us 24 hours to visit and see the sights. My only regret is that we didn’t stay an extra night as I would have liked an extra day to shop and enjoy the town ambiance.

    Assisi is a cute city located on top of a hill in Umbria. Olive trees and beautiful views of the Umbria region surround it. The town is very hilly, so be ready to climb some hills. It was very hot when we visited in July, so be prepared for the weather. It is a very peaceful town, and it is common to see friars, priests, and nuns walking around throughout the city. My daughter calls it the "city of churches." A charming city that I would recommend to travelers who need a slower pace.

    Lovely architecture, great restaurants, but you need to be a good walker to negotiate this hilly area. Did not realize this was a religious pilgimage town so you might get swamped by flocks of nuns and fervent catholic tours.

    The town is absolutely delightful and so much to see.

    The town is absolutely delightful and so much to see. Would like to visit again but would need to be better prepared. Would have liked more informative leaflets and books to be available including well illustrated books. Online information on bus services excellent but unfortunately mid morning services generally absent. The one tourist coach/mini bus agency did not run services to other towns unless it had enough prospective passengers. We had evening meals at many of the restaurants, all very good. It was easy to get round the town.

    My parents had the most amazing time in this hotel. The communication was amazing. Such lovely, warm and friendly staff. They went above and beyond and there were lovely touches and very generous gestures. We could not recommend this accommodation more. Room was lovely and very clean. Very handy location and beautiful place and people. So much guidance, kind help and recommendations from Grace and all the team. The restaurant recommended was the best meal we had in Italy!     It was one of the best places that we have stoped in Italy. The room was very clean and cozy. Maria and Carlo are very warmth, helpful and communicative people. They also gave us recommendations on bars and restaurants. The room is in very good location. The neighbourhood is beautiful and peaceful. It’s quiet and near the bus station.

    Vey clean, beautiful hotel, convenient, breakfast was offered at bargain price and high quality, excellent host, beautiful view from the balcony.
