Like many Cretan coastal towns and villages, Rethymno is overwhelmed by us tourists. It's distressing to walk very crowded mediaeval streets surrounded by souvenir shops. The famous bakeries are wonderful and the harbour is really beautiful. Parking has been addressed but the experience is still not pleasant. We found having a drink and a light meal on the waterfront a joyless experience, crowded area and surly service. I would recommend Rethymno for a quick visit to see the Old Town bakeries and the Harbour.Guest review byJohnAustralia - 10.0

Very attractive, lively and super-friendly town with loads of pretty streets to wander around and numerous bars, restaurants and shops. The old town is mainly pedestrianised and easy to navigate, the town is very attractive and the choice of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets is vast. The Old Town is full of history and narrow streets that need to be explored. There are so many excellent eating places to choose from with cocktail bars and ice cream shops you could eat somewhere different every night for weeks. Favourites include Cafe Galero and Taverna MInares. The Venetian Harbour is lovely walk with restaurants all round The front by the Old Town has plenty of bars which in the evening are full of young people enjoying themselves and although there is music its not too loud as you go past. All along the beach are cafes and bars which offer a good selection for all day eating. Having stayed there a week I now prefer it to Chania, much more going on in an easier access area and less crowded. The old town is rich with historical buildings and features. The fort is worth a visit too, make sure you get a guide book; the on-site information is very sparse. The city itself has everything you could ever need and more. prices are fair and its stunningly beautiful. A city can be beautiful and full of wonderful things to see and do, but its always the people that make your stay. i expected Tourist Fatigue by the time we went in September. It also has a nice pool. Value for the money is amazing!! Also the staff is really nice, always smiling, they also let us borrow sun umbrellas. The location is also something that I loved, beach is extremely close and it is a very nice beach. It wasn’t too crowded where the hotel is but then if you want more crowd and restaurants you have a beautiful 20 minutes walk by the beach to the old town. There is even a washing machine, and there is a general store two minutes walk away to get supplies for cooking.
