Hemel Hempstead is a great choice for visitors to London and Hertfordshire, with a 30-minute train journey directly into London, Euston. The canal quay and restaurants surrounding the Apsley hotel are visitor-friendly, and the town centre has comprehensive shopping facilities. Hemel isn’t a nice as we thought it would be. Town centre very scruffy & full of takeaway shops & fast food outlets. Traffic was hideous with a very dodgy 6 mini roundabout - roundabout! The ambience was great, breakfast lovely, but the staff didn't know what a bloody Mary cocktail is at the bar. The cleaning of the rooms, was also not completely great, but staff were fantastic. The walk along the canal and the beautiful marina are a must and Sainsbury’s is a gem min walk down the road or canal path. The train station at Aspley is not brilliant would recommend booking g tickets online before stay as machines were broken and station is not manned. The reception staff were excellent, cheerful, polite and helpful. The room was an adequate size for two adults and our twelve year old grandson; it would have accommodated four adults but a bit snug. The beds were comfortable and extra pillows were provided on request. There was a kettle and basic coffee/tea making facilities, as expected.
