I'd visited Ouro Preto 31 years earlier on a motorbike.
I'd visited Ouro Preto 31 years earlier on a motorbike. It had not changed a great deal in that time. With its cobbled streets and main square, and old churches scattered about on the steep hill tops. What had changed is there are now numerous artisan shops and places to eat and some fantastic hotels, like this one. We stayed for 4 nights during carnival time. An extra day just to chill out in the milder mountain climate would have been ideal, as it is quite tiring walking up and down the steep cobbled hills. 4 nights outside of carnival time would probably suffice normally, as there is not that much to do or see. It's just a beautiful town with lovely mountain climate. We went for the first day of carnival which was disappointing. One large stage that did not get going until 10.30pm (Due to heat) when it promptly poured with rain. After 20mins this really dampened peoples spirits.Guest review byAnonymous - 10

Ouro Preto is a well-preserved historic site from the 17th century, with several churches from the Baroque period, decorated with elaborate wooden sculptures covered in thin layers of gold. However, the slippery, uneven road surface and steep access roads make travel undesirable for the elderly and people with mobility problems. It is a beautiful quaint town with good restaurants, beautiful churches and other points of interest. However, walking was a challenge as it is hilly with cobblestone or rock streets. With tennis shoes, or good walking shoes it is no problem. the people were very friendly and helpful. Ouro Preto is a city of great historical value.
Ouro Preto is a city of great historical value. I've learned a lot about Brazil's history by a city tour in a "Jardineira". We walked around without any problem. The people are very friendly and good talking. Favorite spot is the "Museu da Inconfidencia" and "Igreja Nossa Senhora do Pillar", the first one built there and covered with gold interior. We visited also a deactivated mine with guidance, the guides explain a lot of the processes for mining gold at XVIII century there. Ouro Preto is unique.
Ouro Preto is unique. I'm a big fan and have been there many times. The Museums are great; the Casa dos Contos is fantastic. The people are nice and helpful. An excellent restaurant is Cafe & Cia.Guest review byalexandre

Ouro Preto is very popular in Brasil and every week-end you have a lot of visitors and tourists. The host is very gentle, and she is taking of you. You will have the pleasure to meet her dogs. The room is simple nothing fanzy but my bed was very firm, and I slept very well. The view from my room was good. The boys who live there are super lovely and helpful. The house is usually peaceful and quiet. The location of the house is awesome right next to Praça tiradentes.
